7283. Field Placement: Prison Law

Grading Basis: Pass/Not Pass

Students in this field placement will be assigned to the Connecticut Office of the Correction Ombudsman, where they will work under the supervision of the Correction Ombuds and affiliated attorney staff to investigate complaints, assess facility conditions, and engage in oversight of correctional institutions across the state. Students will assist with legal research and writing, draft memos on constitutional claims (such as deliberate indifference under the Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments), and may participate in facility tours, interviews with incarcerated individuals, and meetings with Department of Correction officials and policymakers. Students will be expected to complete 8–12 hours of fieldwork per week. The Prison Law Field Placement Seminar is a required co-requisite. Students who enroll in this field placement will be subject to a criminal background check prior to access to correctional facilities.
