7474. Legal Spanish

This course is a merger of the courses formerly offered as Legal Spanish I and II. Students who have taken one/either of those courses may also enroll in this one. The course will provide tudents with with instruction that will aid them in learning a basic legal vocabulary in Spanish, some legal grammatical structures, and proper pronunciation in order to improve their conversational skills so that they can communicate more effectively with Spanish-speaking clients. Class activities will include reading and discussion of simple Spanish legal documents and newspaper coverage of legal issues. Students will also compare the Spanish and Latin legal systems to the U.S legal system. Every week, the class will focus on a different area of the law, and on the main legal vocabulary relevant to that practice area and the differences among the legal systems. Reading and writing of legal documents in Spanish as well as discussions of legal issues and attorney-client mock interviews will take place in this course. Pre-requisite: At least two years of high school Spanish or equivalent exposure to written and spoken Spanish.
