In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of first party property insurance and will include an analysis of how these fundamentals have been applied to claims arising out of some of the major catastrophes in recent American history, including the COVID pandemic, the 911 attack on the World Trade Center, wildfires in the West, the major hurricanes over the past two decades and the tragic breach of the levees in New Orleans arising out of Hurricane Katrina. Coverage topics will include the concepts of fortuity, policy language and its evolution, business interruption coverage, the handling of suspicious claims, and bad faith.
